My Favorite Things Beach Cutie Handmade Cards with Shimmer Spray Background

Welcome to a new "Cards by Kendra" blog post!

Today, I'm excited to share these "Beach Cutie" handmade cards that I created for the MFT Sketch Challenges 489 and 490.

I decided to use the "Beach Cutie" Stamp and Die set from My Favorite Things as my focal point. I started out making the background first because I wanted to try using my new Dylusions Shimmer Sprays.  I had several sheets of watercolor paper already cut to 4.25" x 5.5" as well as some regular Neenah solar white 80# cardstock.  I used Bubblegum Pink and Pure Sunshine shimmer sprays because I thought those two colors looked great together.  I had never used these before so it was trial and error.  For the first spray, I sprayed directly on the watercolor paper and completely covered it.  I kept spraying until there was no more white showing.  It was beautiful!  Then I realized I didn't need to use so much.  Next, I sprayed it on my glass mat and did a smooshing technique.  I loved how these turned out too.  I haven't used those background yet but I plan to soon.  Next I sprayed it on the mat again and added water to dilute it some and used the same smooshing technique, which is the background I ended up using for the second card below.

For both cards, I stamped the images, colored them with copic markers that matched the backgrounds and cut them out using the die. I thought the girl needed to be on a beach so I decided to make a quick smaller watercolor background using watercolor pencils. I started out with dark blue and then went lighter and added an aqua color for the water. Then I colored a brown line and shaded the rest with tan. I blended all of the colors with a watercolor brush pen. I thought it needed a shimmer too, so I sprayed some White Linen on my glass mat and then painted it on the water using a paint brush.  I added this to a piece of black cardstock for the frame.  Since I had to trim this down to fit on the black cardstock base, I saved the pink piece that was cut off and used it as the strip on the left of the sketch.  Since the shimmer was a rose gold color, I thought adding a strip of rose gold foil to the left of the beach background would bring out the color some. Since the backgrounds were slightly warping, I ran the card through my Big Shot just to flatten it out.  When I did this, it put creases in the rose gold foil piece so I had to cover it with a strip of scalloped black border. Next time, I'll know to place a sheet of cardstock above and below the card first. Lesson learned!  I stamped the sentiment "Hello, Sunshine!" on a strip of black cardstock with versamark ink, coated it with white embossing powder and heat set it with my heat gun. I raised the girl and the sentiment up with 3D foam squares. I finished it off with enamel dots.

Here's the first card for MFT Sketch Challenge 489:

What do you think?

Using the diluted shimmer spray background I created while making the background for the first card, I glued this onto a black frame then onto my white cardstock base.  I had some sky backgrounds that I created a long time ago using Distress inks so I decided to cut one out in a heart shape. I used a scalloped heart frame cut from black cardstock to frame it.  I stamped the sentiment "Love you to the Beach & Back" with Tuxedo Black Memento ink on white cardstock and glued it to a strip of rose gold cardstock. I really like how this turned out.

DIY Lip Balm Gift Tag Pouches for Inexpensive Birthday and Thank You Gifts

I wanted to share these lip balm gift tags that I made a few weeks ago using products from My Favorite Things .  I thought these gift tags would make the perfect inexpensive gift to give to my students on their birthdays.  I also made some to give to the young women at my church on Valentine's Day.  I found several lip balm packs on eBay in candy flavors, so I thought they would love them in these cute little gift tags!!  Keep reading for instructions on how to make your own DIY lip balm pouch gift tags!
